The Story

This lot was produced by Negash Abarago, on his family’s farm in the Kedamesa village of Limu, which is located in the Oromia zone. Harvest took place between October 2023 and December 2023, and was processed at the Kedamesa village drying station.

Negash is a second generation farmer who inherited his farm from his parents and has spent over 10 years cultivating coffee on this land. Alongside coffee, Negash also grows bananas, false bananas, and avocados, but whereas these plants act as a source of food, coffee is a cash crop that is a source of income for Negash and his family.

Sourced by our friends at Omwani Coffee. A relationship based East African importer, this is the first season they've brought coffee over from Ethiopia. Omwani pride themselves on building relationships with cooperatives and producers directly, and buying from them year on year.

In Ethiopia, it's a real challenge to source traceable coffee, as most coffee passes through the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange (ECX). The ECX pools coffee together by region, but doesn't retain the info of the farmers who grew it. Therefore you've got to find an exporter who's willing to work with producers directly. Enter Mercota Trading, who work direct with 10 different producers across Ethiopia, including Negash Abarago, the smallholder responsible this wonderfully fruity and floral washed coffee.
